A world leader in sustainable waste management and renewable energy is looking to hire an experienced and talented lawyer to take up the position of General Counsel (Europe) to provide the necessary legal support, as they separate from the wider Group in the US and transition to a freestanding European business and embark on a major period of growth. Their Waste-to-Energy facilities provide communities and businesses with an environmentally sound solution to their solid waste disposal needs by using waste incineration to generate clean energy, minimising waste to landfill and providing a renewable energy source.

Within Europe, the business currently employs 150 staff across the UK & Ireland, with the number expected to grow to around 300 in the next 2 years.

As sole legal counsel within the business (with one direct report) and reporting directly to the European President, you will be primarily responsible for overseeing the company's legal risk and compliance activities, coordinating and managing external counsel as well as providing the board, senior management and the company's employees with sound practical and commercial legal advice. As a key advisor to the business, you will provide legal oversight for a broad range of legal matters across development & construction, planning, litigation, commercial, insurance, corporate and corporate governance matters. The role will also offer the opportunity to hire and manage junior lawyers as the company grows.

Ideally, you will be 7+ PQE with strong post-qualification experience in a reputable law firm and/or as an in-house counsel in a similar position. Prior exposure to the energy or infrastructure sector would be desirable, but is not essential. The ideal candidate will have a strong generalist skill set (corporate, commercial, litigation, employment etc.) and possess a strategic business acumen and an ability to communicate and navigate between senior level internal and external stakeholders.

This role will be hugely rewarding, providing you the chance to play a vital strategic role in the continued growth of the business as long as you have the desire to lead and succeed. A great opportunity to further your in-house legal career, if this role sounds of interest to you, please get in touch ASAP.

Please note our advertisements use PQE/salary levels purely as a guide. However we are happy to consider applications from all candidates who are able to demonstrate the skills necessary to fulfil the role.
